Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessment Workshop (24-Hour)

Course Description

The objective of this program of instruction is to review generalized approaches for identifying opportunities to reduce hazardous material/waste in system/product maintenance, facility construction and maintenance, solid waste management, and other processes.  The course addresses the necessity for management commitment, goal setting, and the appropriate organization of a task force for adequately addressing defined pollution prevention objectives.

1.       Students will understand what is involved in an opportunity assessment and learn how to apply approaches for reducing hazardous material/waste.

2.       Students will learn opportunities for reduction of hazardous materials/wastes.

3.       Students will learn the basic concepts embedded in an opportunity assessment.

4.       Students will know the steps of the assessment process and learn how to apply them to typical DoD activities.

5.       Students will learn how to organize a task force to address defined pollution prevention objectives.

6.       Students will be taught methods of "selling the opportunity".

This lecture introduces management and engineering concepts associated with the identification of areas where pollution prevention programs can be implemented.  In order to facilitate the conveyance of the ideas presented in this course of instruction, an example illustrating the opportunity assessment process will be provided during the lectures.  A pollution prevention opportunity assessment is defined as a systematic procedure designed to identify ways to reduce or eliminate wastes and adverse environmental impacts.  Although pollution prevention programs tend to be site specific, the underlying concepts can be applied virtually anywhere.
