HAZWOPER Training
OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response
(29 CFR 1910.120)
In accordance with DOD Instruction 6050.5 and OSHA’s
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Regulation, 29 CFR 1910.120,
those who are engaged in several different activities may require the following
health & safety training:
Available Courses:
Uncontrolled Hazardous Waste Site Operations
Paragraph
(e) Hazardous Waste Site Operations. Workers
engaged in remediation or removal (clean-up) activities at uncontrolled
hazardous waste sites are required to attend a forty (40) hour initial health
& safety training course (24-hour if no exposure is anticipated).
This is the standard HAZWOPER 40-Hour course that is available in most
metropolitan areas and should be delivered by an industrial hygienist or safety
professional with experience in such activities.
While it is not required, it is highly preferable to attend training that
is accredited with the US EPA’s Environmental Response Team External
Provider Program. GBK is an Approved
Provider of the Hazardous Materials Incident Response Operations
(EPA 165.5), a forty (40) hour course intended to comply with this
requirement.
Paragraph
(p) TSDF Workers. Workers at RCRA permitted treatment, storage, or disposal
facilities (TSDFs) are also regulated by HAZWOPER. While the training requirements are not as programmed in this
area, it is recommended that training be specifically based on facility
planning. GBK has extensive
experience in developing and delivering such planning.
Paragraph
(q) Emergency Response. While technically the requirement for emergency response
training is born from OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard, it is truly a very different
kind of training and treated separately (see Emergency
Response Training.)
