National Environmental Policy Act Compliance & the DoD (16-hours)

Course Description

This course provides awareness for for DoD Military and Civilian Environmental Personnel on basic requirements for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).   NEPA requires environmental staff to use a team approach to mission planning and NEPA compliance.  It also allows advance identification of other environmental laws that may affect an action and gives an opportunity to avoid compliance problems.  In some cases, NEPA allows public scrutiny of plans and facilities.

Course Objectives

After completion of the training, attendees will, working as a team, know how to:

  1. Predict temporary of longer-lasting environmental changes (impacts) caused by DoD activities, and determine how to avoid or reduce those impacts;

  2. Determine types of NEPA documents that may be required and the timing requirements needed to accomplish them before final plans on an exercise or project may begin;

  3. Arrange to get the appropriate documents prepared and the necessary public comments obtained; and

  4. Execute the DoD mission with the least possible disruption, but in compliance with NEPA and other environmental laws.
